eTIMS Deadlines Explained: What Every Kenyan Business Needs to Know

1 July 2026 1 min read

KRA's eTIMS (Electronic Tax Invoice Management System) has been rolling out in phases, and a lot of Kenyan business owners are still unclear on what it actually requires of them and by when.

What eTIMS actually is

eTIMS is KRA's system for capturing tax invoices electronically, in real time, as they're issued. Instead of manually filing VAT returns based on paper trails, your point of sale or invoicing system submits each transaction to KRA as it happens.

Why the deadlines matter

Missing an eTIMS compliance deadline doesn't just mean a warning letter. It can mean penalties, blocked tax compliance certificates, and in some cases disruption to your ability to trade with other VAT-registered businesses who now require an eTIMS-compliant invoice before they'll pay you.

What to do about it

The fastest path to compliance is usually not trying to figure out KRA's developer documentation yourself. A short consultation with a team that has already done this dozens of times will tell you exactly where your business stands and what's needed to get compliant — often within a few days.

If you're unsure whether your business is currently required to be on eTIMS, that's exactly the kind of question worth asking before guessing wrong.
